SETTING AND FURTHER INFO
This is a rough awful writeup since I don't want to straight-up link the google doc everything is in BUT for the curious! Eve is from a fantasy-ish sort of world where humans don't exist; instead, the world is populated by assorted fantastic beasts. All of them have some magic to them: an affinity for/control over a particular element, and the ability to shift back and forth between their animal shape and a human one (usually just referred to as their "other" or bipedal shape, since humans aren't a thing.)
All people from Eve's world have a type of magic sense— where she's from this is specifically geared toward sensing the element another person belongs to as well as what species they are. This also is a good indicator of whether the thing they're looking at is just a person of a species they haven't met before, or an unintelligent beast. (In other settings, this extends to anyone with any kind of innate magic— though if it isn't specifically an element she wouldn't be able to tell what it is automatically. She can still recognize people by it, although it will take longer to be able to tell people with the same type of unfamiliar fundamental magic apart.) Magic acquired from items is completely off of the radar.
While the names and ecological niches of assorted animals are the same, the way they look is not; for example, Eve is familiar with the idea of butterflies, but the ones she knows are basically tiny dragons. Something like a "hare" would still be a small prolific thing that lives in forests and grasslands that runs fast and is tasty to eat, but might be a reptile or a flightless bird of some sort. STILL TRUE but I'm running with universal translator autocorrecting for it, meaning it won't come up in RP much, probably.
That said, the various species of people are still frequently animal-themed and animal named. Snakelike peoples tend to be called serpents, there are Fenris wolves, Nemean lions, etc. The difference is that those names are used to describe kinds of people rather than animals, basically.
